Palfinger History – From a Small Workshop to a Global Leader

06/06/2025

PALFINGER AG is one of the world’s leading groups in the field of lifting equipment and technical solutions serving the transport, construction, logistics, and rescue industries. With over 90 years of establishment and development, PALFINGER has grown from a small mechanical workshop in Austria into a global brand renowned for its product lines including knuckle boom cranes, aerial work platforms, waste collection systems, truck-mounted logistics equipment, and specialized lifting solutions for the marine, defense, and railway sectors.

Key historical milestones in PALFINGER’s development process

1. 1932–1959: Origins from a Mechanical Workshop in Salzburg

PALFINGER was founded in 1932 by Richard Palfinger in Schwarzach (Austria) as a mechanical workshop specializing in repairing and manufacturing trailers and hydraulic systems. During this early period, PALFINGER primarily served local mechanical needs, focusing on product durability and practicality.

2. 1964–1980: Strategic Turning Point with Hydraulic Knuckle Boom Cranes

In 1964, PALFINGER introduced its first hydraulic crane, marking a major turning point in product development history. With its flexible knuckle boom design, this type of crane quickly became a superior lifting solution in the cargo transport industry. By the 1970s, PALFINGER had developed numerous crane versions with optimized structures, beginning its expansion into European countries.

3. 1989–2000: Restructuring and Global Development

After undergoing a restructuring process in the late 1980s, PALFINGER was officially listed on the Vienna Stock Exchange in 1999, thereby accelerating its globalization strategy. The company established subsidiaries in Germany, France, Italy, and Spain, while also deploying an international dealer network.

During this period, the slogan “Lifting Solutions” began to take shape as a commitment to PALFINGER’s innovation and superior technical quality.

4. 2001–2010: Product Portfolio Diversification and Strategic Acquisitions

In the first decade of the 21st century, PALFINGER intensified its product diversification strategy by expanding into areas such as:

Aerial work platforms

Truck-mounted equipment (tail lifts, hooklifts, skiploaders)

Solutions for the forestry and waste management industries

Concurrently, PALFINGER carried out a series of strategic acquisitions, notably including:

Bison (aerial work platforms)

Epsilon (forestry equipment)

Ratcliff Palfinger in the UK (tail lifts)

These acquisitions helped PALFINGER expand its production capacity and access new market segments.

5. 2010–2020: Global Expansion – Consolidating its Position as the Number 1 Brand

This period saw PALFINGER’s accelerated and robust globalization. The company invested in production centers in Russia, Brazil, China, and the USA, and expanded its distribution network to over 130 countries.

A significant strategic step was the partnership with Sany Group (China) in 2012 to penetrate deeper into the Asian market. Furthermore, PALFINGER heavily invested in the digitalization of products and production processes (Digitalization 4.0), helping to increase efficiency and reduce costs for customers.

In 2016, PALFINGER acquired the Marine Business segment of Harding Group, officially entering the global marine equipment and life-saving solutions sector.

6. 2020 to Present: Towards a Sustainable and Digital Future

Entering the new decade, PALFINGER is focusing on developing smart, environmentally friendly solutions capable of integrating IoT (Internet of Things) and AI (Artificial Intelligence) into its lifting equipment. The “Vision & Strategy 2030” was announced, setting the following goals:

Sustainable growth with a focus on ESG (Environmental – Social – Governance)

Reshaping customer experience through digital services

Developing smart, connected products (Smart Lifting Solutions)

In 2023, PALFINGER launched several entirely new crane series, such as the TEC series, featuring intelligent control systems, advanced safety sensors, and an optimized design for work efficiency.
From a small mechanical workshop in the 1930s, PALFINGER has continuously innovated to become a global symbol of reliability, efficiency, and cutting-edge technology in the lifting equipment sector. PALFINGER’s remarkable development is not only a testament to its sound strategy of innovation and globalization but also reflects a strong commitment to customers, partners, and society.

With its Vision 2030 strategy, PALFINGER continues to lead the digital transformation journey, moving towards a more sustainable and intelligent future in the global lifting industry.
